About Me
Welcome to online counseling. Initiating therapy is often a scary and anxiety-inducing process. By coming here, you've already taken a radical step in walking closer to your preferred life and preferred being.
I have more than 10 years of experience in providing clinical therapy to individuals, couples, families, and children in a wide range of capacities, such as outpatient mental health clinic, residential settings, foster care programs, homeless shelter, city center, and my own private practice. My clients will tell you that they experience me as a genuine and warm person. I embrace compassion, respectfulness, and modesty in conversations. Never will I claim to “know” your experiences fully and the extent in which problems have impacted you. I aspire to always try to understand the unique circumstances you’re going through by asking questions instead of coming to my own conclusions. I also bring my personal experiences into our discussions when such sharing can provide perspectives and resonance. I understand the problems we encounter in life can often convince us that there is no way out and attempt to undermine our abilities and hopes. No matter how difficult the issues are or how frustrated and hopeless you feel, I’m dedicated to team up with you against the problems you’re facing and tackle them together with tireless persistence.
My practice embraces recovery-oriented approach such as Narrative and Post Modern Therapy, which focus on the meaning in which we construct our lives, the stories that influenced these constructions, and the socio-cultural-political forces that help shape our identities. Narrative Therapy holds the premise that our identities are informed by narratives, whether uniquely personal (e.g., the stories that we know and tell about ourselves and the stories that others know and tell about us) or culturally influenced (e.g., dominant cultural ideas about who we are and our worthiness). Depending on the kinds of identity conclusions we embrace, they can either empower or subjugate our sense of who we are. I believe that we are "multi-storied" and that the emergence of problems reflect the distanced relationship with our own knowledge, skills, and commitments. Special attention is devoted to reclaim your life from the problems and develop "richer knowings" of yourself, in addition to deconstructing dominant discourses that may have undermined your abilities, efforts, and values. This is a non-blaming and non-shaming view that creates some breathing room from the challenges you're experiencing and regain a sense of control and agency back from the problems. This strength-based, meaning-based, and active approach lays the foundation for living in empowering ways and weaving together the threads of possibilities and agency. I look forward to working collaboratively with you to reclaim the directions of your life.
To better personal growth and ensure the highest quality of care, I continue to learn from the folks I meet with and from my professional field, by reading, conversing, writing, and reflecting. I have published two articles, one in Family Process and one in the Journal of Feminist Therapy. I presented at the American Family Therapy Academy in Colorado (2009) and in Maryland (2010). I also believe in giving-back endeavors and devote a fair amount of time providing pro bono work and discounted counseling sessions to folks in need. In 2012, I received President Obama's Volunteer Service Award in recognition of my counseling service at the Village of Hope.
Personally, I feel an intricate connection between my mental health and physical fitness, and feel that a resilient mind contributes to a strong body, and vice versa. Thus, I run, hike, and travel as much as I can. Being in nature restores my spirit and humbles my mind, while running hones my sense of discipline and dedication. Most recently, I finished a marathon in under 4 hours. At my leisure, I also enjoy getting lost in books and movies, and spending time with my two nephews and my partner of 12 years. Nature, music, family, reading, and physical activity keep me grounded.
My Availability: I am able to review messages on a daily basis. There may be delays on weekends and holidays. Depending on the length and the complexities of issues, my response time will vary. I will be able to respond more frequently to shorter messages. For lengthier messages, it will take me a bit longer because I prefer to reflect thoroughly and respond in a thoughtful manner. However, I understand that sometimes you may need more support during certain periods in life, and I’m more than willing to engage more frequently in times of need. I welcome you to discuss your hopes and preference with me in regards to frequency of engagement. I hope for us to develop a pace of interaction that is helpful to you and one that makes sense for both of us.

Testimonials
"My counselor has been an amazing support. She is compassionate, understanding, friendly and professional. She seems to understand every type of situation and be able to provide good input and perspective. I recommend this service to anyone looking to talk through issues, just have someone to talk to, whether you think you need it or not, because it is amazing what you will find when you have someone who cares to open up and share with.. you learn more about yourself, the goodness within you and how to better understand others."
"In my work with Jane I see that she is a truely caring and insightful therapist. She does not assume nor condescend. She is genuinely curious about my personal concerns and fiercely supportive yet honest. She has a way of reflecting back bits of our conversations in a way that profoundly reaches me. I am very greatful for her service. It has helped me cope with some very hard life circumstances and has helped my emotional wellbeing tremendously."
"Hsiao-Chieh has been incredible. She is a very kind, understanding, helpful therapist. She has helped me more than I could have believed. I've worked with her for 2 years now and she has been nothing but a pleasure to work with. There were times I didn't think I would make it through, but I did because of her. She is amazing in her knowledge of issues I bring up, always patiently work through things with me, and never seems to lose sight of everything we talked about, even months after. She keeps detailed notes and would reflect on things to bring up more insights. I don't think I could feel more comfortable with anyone else. If you want a compassionate, helpful, and knowledgeable therapist who will support you through the hard times of your life, she will be able to help. I'm so grateful for her."

"Jane was/is my first therapist--and boy did I get lucky to have her as my first therapist. Because of the care and support I receive from her, I'll likely never need another therapist again. On top of it I feel like I've made another friend that I can always share things with even long after therapy has ended. I do not live near her so I do not get to see her in person, but I have in no way felt that an online relationship has been limiting or detrimental to our blooming relationship. I feel her presence sometimes more than the actual people in my life, which is a godsend when a lot of the time I can feel very alone and like no one understands what I am going through. When I feel uncertain about things or feel a loss of control over my emotions, I think about the things we've discussed and feel a pleasant almost homey feeling come over me and I relax.
She has helped me through numerous obstacles in my life: depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship issues, troubles with my past, even the death of someone close to me. On top of it we talk about other issues that adds brightness, fun, and connection, so it's not all doom and gloom. Her approach is careful and controlled, and she always makes sure you are in control of what comes up in conversation. She is good at picking up on cues and delving into issues that you may mention but have a hard time describing. She has made major issues such as inferiority complexes and feelings of unimportance feel less terrifying and all-encompassing as she helps you to personify these issues, thus taking the power out of them.
I am not one to ask simple questions and yet every time she has a thoughtful, even creative, and understanding response to each complicated question I ask, even the existential ones. She is thorough, respectful, and flexible. She listens when you want a change in the way she responds, but she of course always double checks anyway. She has also given me the courtesy of viewing me as whole and good anyway that I am, even through predicaments and my own mistakes, and she has honored me by taking some of things I say and learning from them herself, as she has told me. So she is always willing to be open-minded and learn new ways to help you.
She has been more than willing to share with me things I have asked her about in order to garner a stronger relationship. In this way she puts her importance on having a solid relationship, even friendship, with you over thinking about it as a job or something she has to do to make money. I therefore feel both cared for and safe in her hands. Her spirit, kindness, and intelligence can be felt through whatever medium you are communicating with her. In this way, you know you have someone out there who truly cares about your well-being.
